Chamber Orchestra
Membership open to students in grades 6 - 12
The APA Chamber Orchestra is devoted to enhancing each student’s musical experience in string instruments. Students perform for a variety of functions throughout the year in addition to playing in concerts and drama productions. Chamber Orchestra members are eligible for various chamber competitions and the All-State Orchestra competition. Students are selected to join the orchestra by the director through auditions, and must be proficient at the intermediate level. Students playing other instruments may perform at an event by invitation from the director. Practices are scheduled during activity period, class time as assigned by student’s schedule, and other times as scheduled by the director.
Dance Ensemble
Membership open to students in grades 9 - 12
The APA Dance Ensemble offers students the opportunity to perform in a unified dance group at school and community functions. Not only will the students perform teacher-choreographed pieces, but will also have the opportunity to perform student-choreographed works. This is an opportunity for continued development of movement skills, creative processing, and critical thinking skills. Students must audition to become a member of the Dance Ensemble. Regular practices are scheduled during club period and other rehearsal times as scheduled by the director.
Drama
Membership open to students in grades 6 - 8
The APA Drama Club provides an opportunity for students to enhance dramatic skills and become involved in the technical aspects of drama production. Students are selected to join the Drama Club by the director through auditions held in the fall. A school production is held annually. Rehearsals are scheduled by the director.
Fellowship of Christian Athletes (Junior)
Membership open to students in grades 7 - 8
The Fellowship of Christian Athletes is an organization that attempts to meet the students where they are in their spiritual journey and help them to move toward commitment to Christ and spiritual growth. It also aids athletes and coaches in maintaining or restoring relationships and directing athletes and coaches toward family and church. Activities include meetings every other week at lunch for pizza at which time a short program is held. The organization is also active in the Academy’s annual food drives.
Fellowship of Christian Athletes (Senior)
Membership open to students in grades 9 - 12
The Fellowship of Christian Athletes is an organization that attempts to meet the students where they are in their spiritual journey and help them to move toward commitment to Christ and spiritual growth. It also aids athletes and coaches in maintaining or restoring relationships and directing athletes and coaches toward family and church. Activities include sponsoring a family at Christmas, organizing and participating in food drives, and participating in “See You at the Pole” (National Prayer Day).
Honors Chorus
Membership open to students in grades 7 - 12
The Honors Chorus offers students the opportunity to perform in a vocal ensemble. The vocal ensemble performs standard choral, madrigal, and show choir selections. Students perform at school and community functions. Students must audition to become a member of the Honors Chorus. Practices are scheduled during club period and other times as scheduled by the director.
International Thespian Society
Membership open to students in grades 9 - 12
The International Thespian Society is an honor society which is part of the Educational Theater Association. Its purposes are to promote excellence in school theater and to maintain the advancement of standards in theater arts. Membership is open to any high school student, based on their participation in theatrical events and recommendation of the faculty.
Junior Beta Cub
Membership open to academically eligible students in grade 7, 8, 9
Junior Beta Club is an honor society for academically qualified students. It is also devoted to service in the school and the community. Students in grades seven, eight, and nine who maintain a 92 cumulative grade average are eligible for Junior Beta Club. Major club activities include an annual magazine sale fund-raiser. Both fall and spring induction ceremonies are held for new members. Regular meetings are scheduled during club period.
Le Cercle Francais
Membership open to students currently enrolled in a French class or expressing
interest in the francophone culture.
Le Cercle Francais is comprised of students from all levels of French study who are interested in working to spread French culture and language, raise funds to supplement the Academy’s French program, and add enjoyment to the study of French. Club activities include fund-raisers, peer teaching, and spreading fracophone culture within the “French community” at APA and among all students. The club functions through committees. In addition to officers, each French class level has a representative. These meet during club period as needed to carry out projects. Small segments of time during French classes are used to report on projects or committee meetings.
MathCounts
Membership open to students in grades 6 - 8
MathCounts is a program designed to increase interest in mathematics and understanding of high-level mathematical concepts. Sponsored by the National Society of Professional Engineers, MathCounts assists in developing technically literate students. In February of each year, the APA MathCounts team competes at the Eastern Regional MathCounts competition. Talented math students in grades 6 through 8 may compete for membership. Criteria for selection include written evaluations, previous math performance, and evidence of dependability. Approximately twelve students are selected to participate at the school level. Eight students compete at the regional level. Practices are held during activity period on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and other times as needed. The program begins in October.
Membership open to students in grades 7 - 12 taking Algebra I or higher
The Math Team is comprised of a group of students who represent APA at the ECU Math Contest and other competitions. Some members are chosen by their math teacher; others are determined by scores on a test administered during math class. The Math Team is comprised of individual teams in Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and a Comprehensive team that covers both Advanced Math and Calculus. During competitions, individual team members compete by taking written tests. Both individual scores and composite team scores are used in determining competitive ranking. Prior to math competitions, practice sessions may be scheduled during lunch, club period, or after school.
Middle School Council
Membership open to students in grades 6 - 8
The Middle School Council is the representative body for students in the middle school. It is comprised of twelve elected members: one from each sixth and seventh grade homeroom and two from each eighth grade homeroom. The president and other officers are elected by the council members. The Middle School Council promotes unity and community service among students in the middle school. It also sponsors fall and spring dances in grades six through eight.
National Art Honor Society (NAHS)
Membership open to students in grades 9 - 12 who have maintained a B average
in a high school art class and receive the recommendation of the art faculty
NAHS provides leadership in the arts, promotes the arts in the school and the community, and functions as a service organization utilizing the visual arts. Members participate in a variety of fund-raising activities, including face painting and sales of student designed note cards to raise funds for additional art supplies. Additionally, members provide all required signs and graphic arts for school functions, and maintain a decorative Lunch Menu board in the school cafeteria. An annual induction ceremony in February or March features a guest speaker from an art career field. Regular meetings of NAHS are scheduled for Wednesdays at lunch.
North Carolina Geography Bee
Membership open to students in grades 6 - 8
The North Carolina Geography Bee is an academic competition using a question-and-answer format based on geographical facts. The North Carolina competition is part of the National Geography Bee sponsored by National Geographic, and the state winner advances to the final competition in Washington, D.C. A school may send only one student to compete in the state bee, held in April of each year in Raleigh. As part of their social studies curriculum, all middle school students compete in a school-wide bee. The winner of this activity must then qualify for state competition by taking a written examination. There is no regularly scheduled practice time for this activity outside of middle school social studies classes.
Outdoor Club
Membership open to students in grades 9 - 12
Club arranges speakers, activities, and outings around adventure sports and outdoor recreation. Past activities have included rock climbing, snow skiing, and beach ecology. Activities will vary by student interest.
The Parrott Post
Membership open to students in grades 10 - 12
The Parrott Post is APA’s student newspaper. It is produced by students enrolled in Journalism class. Students are assigned various stories and are responsible for gathering information, writing stories, typing and laying out the paper using the computer. The Parrott Post editor is selected by the adviser. The editor and adviser together make assignments for other staff members. Although students work on The Parrott Post during their daily journalism class, they may be required to use additional out-of-class time to complete their reporting.
The Patriot
Membership open to students in grades 10 - 12
The Patriot is the Academy’s yearbook. It is produced by students enrolled in Yearbook class. Students are responsible for gathering information, writing stories, typing and laying out the yearbook. Additionally, students are required to sell advertising. The Patriot editor is a rising senior selected by the adviser. The editor is required to attend a summer journalism camp. Other staff members work on The Patriot during their daily yearbook class.
Quiz Bowl
Membership open to students in grades 9 - 12
The APA Quiz Bowl Team is dedicated to representing the Academy with distinction in a variety of academic question-and-answer competitions. Each year, the Quiz Bowl participates in the N.C. Public Library Quiz Bowl competition, WRAL-TV’s Brain Game competition, and various scrimmages and regional invitational competitions as they become available. In 1995, APA’s Quiz Bowl team won the N.C. State Championship. Any high school student is eligible for Quiz Bowl. During the first month of school, open practices are held on a weekly basis. Beginning in October, the adviser will select eight to ten students as team members based on their success in practice, level of experience, and demonstrated commitment to Quiz Bowl. A student may be removed from Quiz Bowl by the adviser if his or her participation in practice is disruptive. Regularly scheduled practices are held twice a week during lunch. Additional competition practices may be scheduled for other times.
Science Olympiad
Membership open to students in grade 7 - 9
The Science Olympiad team is devoted to improving the quality of science education at the Academy, creating a passion for learning science, and providing recognition for outstanding achievements in science. These goals are accomplished through classroom activities, research training sessions, field trips, and academic interscholastic competitions. APA 's Science Olympiad team has won the NC State Championship 9 of the past 11 years and APA has competed nationally 10 times, finishing among the top 10 nationally five times. Any interested student in grades 7 through 9 is invited to try out for Science Olympiad. An initial team of 30 members is chosen based on a general science test and participation in "Building Events." These 30 initial team members compete at an in school competition in December when the final team of 15 team members plus alternates is chosen. Science Olympiad regulations allow only one 15-member team to compete beyond the regional level; thus the APA team is trimmed to 15 members for competition. Science Olympiad team members meet to practice after school twice weekly.
Senior Beta Club
Membership open to academically eligible students in grades 10 - 12
APA’s Senior Beta Club exists to honor academically talented students and allow them to collectively serve their school and community. First semester sophomores and all juniors and seniors who have a cumulative average of 92.5 or above on academic courses are eligible for membership. Members may be place on a one semester probation if their academic average falls below 92.5 or the adviser and Headmaster feel they have displayed attitudes or behavior unbecoming to a Beta member. After one semester of probation, a student may be suspended from Senior Beta Club if he or she has not met academic or character requirements. Senior Beta Club members regularly volunteer for Special Olympics each year and sponsor Save-A-Life Month in February and March. Both fall and spring induction ceremonies are held for new members. Regular meetings are scheduled during club period on the first Thursday of each month.
SERV Society
Membership open to students in grades 9 - 12 who have participated in a minimum number of volunteer hours
The Academy’s SERV Society (Students Effectively Realizing their Value) was established as an honorary society to promote volunteerism within the school family and to recognize exemplary participation in community service. To qualify for membership, a student must compile at least 12 hours of community service. (Does not include service on the APA campus or service performed as a member in a school club.) SERV activities include maintaining a resource file and bulletin board to publicize volunteer opportunities for students and assisting the school as staffing for special events. SERV sponsors service trips each year. An annual induction ceremony is held for new members in February of each year. Meetings are called during lunch or club period, as needed.
Spanish Club
Membership open to students currently enrolled in a Spanish class or who have
taken at least two years of Spanish
The Spanish Club functions as a service organization to assist Spanish speaking people in the community. Club members participate in fund-raisers and volunteer opportunities, such as a penny drive to help purchase books and resource materials for Spanish speaking parents and students in the local area. Spanish Club also hosts occasional speakers to inform students about the growing Hispanic community in eastern North Carolina. Meetings are held monthly during the club period.
Spectrum
Membership open to students in grades 9 - 12
Spectrum is the literary journal of Arendell Parrott Academy published annually in the winter. It features poetry, stories, essays, and art work by students in grades 1 through 12 from the previous calendar year. The Spectrum staff is comprised of students who volunteer to work on the journal. The editor is selected by the adviser. Other staff members are assigned to various committees: an editorial board, layout and computer production, typing, and art coordination. In the fall, Spectrum staff and individual committees meet during lunch, club period, or after school to organize and plan the journal.
Student Government Association (SGA)
Membership open to students in grades 9 - 12
SGA is the governing body for the Academy’s high school. Its purpose is to represent students and provide leadership in improving the school community. Class officers elected at the beginning of each school year for the 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades are automatically representatives in SGA. The President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Parliamentarian are elected by the high school during the first three weeks of the academic year. Every student may nominate by written ballot one student for each office. The office of President must be filled by a senior. The ten students receiving the most nominations for any office become candidates. After a four-day campaign, elections are held. SGA is responsible for planning and implementing Spirit Week and Homecoming activities. It also helps mobilize students for community volunteer campaigns such as the Salvation Army canned goods drive at Christmas. SGA meetings are scheduled during club period or lunch.
Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD)
Membership open to students in grades 9 - 12 who sign a "Contract for Life” with their parents
SADD is a national organization promoting peer leadership dedicated to preventing underage drinking and drug use by focusing attention on the potentially life threatening consequences of destructive decisions. SADD's mission is to provide students with the best prevention and intervention tools possible to deal with their issues. Activities of the club have included Red Ribbon Week, a Tree of Life at Christmas, Prom Promise and meetings during club period.
Tri-M Music Honor Society
Membership open to students in grades 9 - 12 who are studying music and
receive the recommendation of the music faculty
Tri-M is a national music honor society for gifted and dedicated student musicians at the high school level. Eligible students must meet criteria for scholarship, character, cooperation, leadership, and service. Activities include fund-raisers, such as bake sales and donations to community service projects. Each spring, a Tri-M induction ceremony is held. Regular meetings are scheduled two times each semester during club period.
